LA TIMES – What is it like to play a teenager preparing to kill herself? At just 20, Australian actress Katherine Langford flew across the Pacific to take on her first major acting job: starring as Hannah Baker in “13 Reasons Why.” The controversial Netflix drama, executive-produced by “Spotlight” director Tom McCarthy, inspired a disturbing Internet meme and provoked furious discussion of its many themes, among them bullying, sexual assault, depression, slut-shaming and teen suicide. Langford’s character has taken her own life, leaving behind 13 cassette tapes to explain why she did it.
Once “13 Reasons” wrapped, Langford quickly slipped into another American role in the forthcoming Greg Berlanti movie “Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda,” which revolves around a gay teen trying to come out on his own terms. Langford — who cites anti-bullying icon Lady Gaga as her biggest creative influence — seems genuinely thrilled to immerse herself in projects with a socially conscious edge. “It’s lovely because you feel like you are part of something that has made a difference,” she says, adding that she hopes “13 Reasons Why” fans “may be a little kinder” to those around them. “Even though it’s just a piece of entertainment, it’s generated conversation that might make people more aware that tiny things you do can affect somebody else in a big way.”
How did your high school experience compare to the one in “13 Reasons Why”?
My high school experience was a lot happier than Hannah Baker’s. I went to a gifted and talented school, so I was surrounded by really interesting people from all different walks of life and I had a really strong friend group. The school was very liberal in that I had freedom. During my study periods I wasn’t being watched by a teacher so I would go to the auditorium and write songs. That’s maybe one of the reasons why I was able to become an actor, because I was given the freedom to do that.
Your character undergoes some very graphic, hard-to-watch experiences. How did you prepare?
Particularly for Hannah’s later scenes, I spoke with a psychiatrist who deals with adolescent development and that helped inform me from a medical and factual point of view. What was really special about the project was the way it was written. These characters are so fleshed out and real that it made it easy for me to relate to Hannah and to understand what she was going through. I feel that we respect the intellect of the audience. Sixteen, 15-year-olds are a lot smarter than people give them credit for.
Kate Walsh and Brian d’Arcy James, who play my parents, also offered me a lot of support. It was like there was an invisible net I was never going to slip through. While we were shooting, it hit home for me: I am acting this, but there are people out there who are going through this [suffering] every day.

DEADLINE – It’s not official – 13 Reasons Why, Netflix’s adaption of the bestselling 2007 YA book by Jay Asher, has been renewed for a 13-episode second season to premiere in 2018. Season 2 will pick up in the aftermath of Hannah Baker’s death and the start of the characters’ complicated journeys toward healing and recovery.
Executive produced by Selena Gomez, 13 Reasons Why has been a breakout. It was well received by critics and has gotten a lot of attention on social media. Tony and Pulitzer Prize winner Brian Yorkey, who wrote the adaptation and serves as an executive producer on the series, will take the reins as showrunner in Season 2.
Season 1 follows teenager Clay Jensen (Dylan Minnette) as he returns home from school to find a mysterious box with his name on it lying on his porch. Inside he discovers cassette tapes recorded by Hannah Baker (newcomer Katherine Langford) —his classmate and crush—who tragically committed suicide two weeks earlier. On tape, Hannah explains that there are thirteen reasons why she decided to end her life. Kate Walsh, Brian D’Arcy James, Derek Luke, Brandon Flynn, Justin Prentice, Alisha Boe, Christian Navarro and Tommy Dorfman also star.
The which deals with teen suicide, bullying, drunk driving and rape in graphic detail, has been the subject of active discussion, drawing criticism by some mental health experts who say the show could pose health risks for certain young people, especially those with suicidal thoughts. In response, Netflix amped up its content warnings.

I-D – Take note because Katherine Langford is officially one to watch. The 20-year-old Australian actress doesn’t do things by halves, diving head first into her first proper acting role as Hannah Baker, the lead character in Netflix’s “13 Reasons Why”.
Katherine Langford was accepted into the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) in 2016 – but moved to LA to start auditioning in the general chaos of “pilot season” before she even enrolled. Though she didn’t catch a break in LA during that first visit, back home in Australia, Langford submitted an audition tape for 13 Reasons Why” and had her mind blown when she got “the call” telling her to pack her bags as she had secured the part.
With the shows heavyweight subject matter – including teen suicide – it’s a bold first move for the fresh faced Perth resident. Barely existing online (she only has 1000 twitter followers a week before the show launches) she is starry-eyed but unphased by the big time, even though you get the feeling she’s on the cusp of a life-changing moment. With the cult following behind Jay Asher’s original novel 13 Reasons Why there is no doubt that she is going to be popular.
Currently shooting her first feature film, the pro-LGBTQ Simon Vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda – you can expect to see a whole lot more of Katherine Langford in the very near future.
This is your first foray into acting – as a previously unknown talent, who is Katherine Langford?
I was a really left of centre kid growing up. I was a national swimmer and then I wanted to be a singer and then acting came on in. I’m a Taurus [laughs]. I went to an academic selective school, like a school for the gifted, that’s where all the creativity started to reverberate. I stopped swimming and in my free periods I would go and write music on the piano in the auditorium and was part of the drama kids. After high school I thought ‘I want to give this a crack’ and it’s worked out pretty well so far.
Has it been an easy ride? It seems like you’ve fallen into a first job that is also a pretty big break!
When I look at how things have panned out, it does seem like it’s been easy, but I look back and there were bumps in the road. I started [acting] quite late, I think I had my first acting class in March 2015, so I was turning 19. Everything has been by the seat of my pants, you get flung into pilot season or thrown into your first TV show and, even though this show is incredible, it was the hardest but best first job I could have ever had. I’m a very studious, driven, stubborn young person, so when someone told me, ‘You’re 19 there’s no way you’re going to be an actor, you’re starting too late’, my reaction was ‘Just watch me.’ [laughs].
